Thank you for showing your interest in the Neuroscience and Deep Learning (NDL) reading group @MNI. We are back with details for our second meeting on March 20 at 1:00 pm!!
Please RSVP here :- https://ndl2.app.rsvpify.com/
--Brief 15 minute presentation--
Our second meeting will start with a brief presentation by Dr. Rhalena Thomas. Dr. Thomas is a postdoctoral fellow at the MNI and she will discuss a unique dataset where deep learning could be used to help answer some key questions her lab is investigating. Our goal with her presentation is to illustrate the potential in using deep learning in a neuroscience dataset.
--Paper for discussion and modules--
Next, we will dive into a paper in a more structured way. The paper we chose for this meeting is:
This paper deals with the correspondence between representations learnt by a CNN and those in the human visual cortex. To aid the discussion of the paper, we have planned to split the paper into the following modules :-
Introduction and Rationale of the experiment (Section 1 through Section 2.1 of paper, along with a short primer on human visual cortex layers and their functions)
Experiment design and data analysis pipeline (Section 2.2 through Section 2.6 of paper)
Results - I (Section 3 of paper, Figs 2-7)
Results - II (Section 3 of paper, Figs 8-14)
Discussions (Section 4 of paper)
--Sign up to present--
We would like to have different speakers take us through different modules so we get a varied perspective of the paper and its main findings. If you're interested in presenting a particular module outlined above, please email Arna (arna.ghosh@mail.mcgill.ca) by Sunday March 17 letting him know which module you wish to discuss.
We just want to emphasize that no one is an expert in everything and we are all choosing to have these meetings so we can learn from each other. These presentations are meant to be informal. You do not need to use powerpoint if you choose to not do so. You can just get up and talk or point to something on your laptop, or a printout! Whatever makes you more comfortable. If you're not presenting please please please feel free to interrupt any of the speakers at any point to ask questions. The more questions, the better the discussion will be!

--Multiple Sites--
For this meeting we are trying to coordinate with multiple sites: MNI and the Jewish General Hospital. If it all goes according to plan (never does), the sites will be connected via video conferencing. We hope this would allow for more people to attend the meeting at their venue of convenience.
